Speech by Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, on World Philosophy Day
November 19, 2009
The theme of World Philosophy Day 2009 is Dialogue among Cultures, which provides us with the opportunity to reflect in a timely manner on the relationship between communication, sharing and dissemination of men and women, ideas and concepts in today's world. Ahead of the 2010 International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures declared by the United Nations General Assembly, we need more than ever to think about the foundations of the free spread of speech and practice, as this is closely related to the world's cultural diversity. Philosophy, along with other humanities and social sciences, can help us debate this way of dialogue again. Perhaps we can view this dialogue as a dynamic combination of social and cultural relationships and interactions, thus opening up a diverse world. As society as a whole is learning how to live in a multicultural environment, we should develop our capabilities and combine collective and individual visions. Since the establishment of World Philosophy Day in 2005, we have mobilized many researchers, intellectuals, students and teachers in the field of philosophy around the world to carry out activities around different themes. This event also provides an open platform for the general public to conduct discussion and debate in an interdisciplinary and diverse manner. The Russian Federation will host international events for this year's World Philosophy Day in Moscow and St. Petersburg from November 16 to 19, 2009. I also call on our partners around the world-universities, research institutes, UNESCO Chairs, National Commissions, the International Council on Philosophy and Humanities (CIPSH), the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP), the International Society of Philosophy (IIP)-to join us in this event. While engaging in a philosophical dialogue on cultural dialogue, we also need to once again place discussions on core issues such as diversity, human dignity and rights at the forefront of the international agenda. Let us engage in this debate with confidence.
                                           Irina Bokova
