The Ethiopian birr is the legal tender of Ethiopia. The issuing institution is the National Bank of Ethiopia.

Currency denominations include notes of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 200 birr, and coins of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 cents and 1 birr. The main and secondary currency system is: 1 birr =100 cents (cents).

Its ISO currency symbol is ETB. Ethiopia issued the Ethiopian dollar on July 23, 1945. In September 1974, the Ethiopian Empire was overthrown. In November 1974, the newly formed Socialist Ethiopian Provisional Military Government took over power, and the currency still uses the Egyptian dollar. The currency was issued on October 21, 1976, and its value remained unchanged.

Before 1976, Bill's official English translation was dollar, which was later changed to the current birr.
